I post this as the first project because it's actually done. As mentioned before, there are 5 cats living under our back porch.
1. Staple chicken-wire to wood, bury other end in the ground
2. Cover with dirt
Close-up of the one-way door. It's super high-tech. The door is wider than the hole it covers, allowing it to swing out, but not in. Cats are able to find said door because everything else is buried in dirt, and it's the only thing letting in light.

I was dying to see your "reverse lobster pot" cat door. It's just great, and now your house is greener- being earth banked as it is and all.
I must say you have done your engineer grandfather and great grandfather proud! They were civil & mechanical engineers respectively. I'm glad to see you have stayed within the structural design end of things- thus proving that it really is genetic.
Your house is clearly in the hands of a master (with the degree to prove it). YOU'RE IN GOOD HANDS WITH MARGARET!!
